Forest Legends

This series offers a selection of short stories about charming and magical creatures of the forest.

From the Legend of the Fairy Fortress (France) to the Legend of Momotaro (Japan), here are fantastical stories of magical creatures from all over the world. Each of the folkloric tales is preceded by a description of the forest creature represented in that tale, like leprechauns, elves and water nymphs.

Forest Legends - Ogres

Who’s afraid of ogres? Maybe everyone. But perhaps we should get to know them better instead of being so quick to judge. After all, these mountain-sized creatures may make the earth shake when they walk, but they are actually pretty nice deep down.

Forest Legends - Leprechauns

What a name! Who might these woodland creatures be? Don’t worry, recognising them is easy! Leprechauns are those little men dressed in green who are so popular in Ireland. They have pointed ears and bright orange beards and hair.

Forest Legends - Water Nymphs

Every self-respecting forest has its own air, tree and water nymphs. And today, we want to tell you about the latter. They’re delicate, mysterious creatures. They move around by lightly jumping from one lily pad to the next.

Pixie dust, glittering wands, multi-coloured wings: fairies are very special creatures. And there are so many of them that even Grandma didn’t manage to meet them.

Forest Legends - Gnomes

Here they are! Just the creatures you were waiting for: small, chubby, good-natured, friendly things who wear pointy hats and often have a well-groomed white beard.

Forest Legends - Satyrs

Satyrs are very peculiar creatures: they sort of look like stocky humans and, instead of feet, they have hard, noisy hooves, like goats.

Forest Legends - Trolls

After all that talk of ogres, we can’t help but introduce you to the trolls. They can be a bit pesky to deal with, too, come to think of it.
